Key researchers of the RVRU:

Prof. John Isaacs, NuTH Director of Research & Consultant Rheumatologist, has an outstanding track record as CI/PI in experimental medicine and translational research in inflammatory arthritis.

Prof. Volker Straub, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist & Director of John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre, is an international expert in neuromuscular disease. He leads several larger consortium projects and serves as CI/PI on many early phase trials including gene and other novel therapies.

Prof. Grainne Gorman, Consultant Neurologist & Director of the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research, is a leading expert in mitochondrial disorders and has won substantial funding for many experimental medicine studies in the area.

Prof. David Jones, Director of NU Centre of Rare Diseases, is an international expert in Autoimmune Liver Disease, in particularly the disease impact on patients and development and evaluation of new treatments.

Prof. Quentin Anstee is an international expert in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. His translational research programme has attracted >€50m grant income as PI from the EU H2020, IMI2 and industry collaborators.

Prof. Azfar Zaman, Consultant cardiologist & Professor of Cardiology, has >20 years’ experience as PI/CI of clinical trials ranging from early phase to phase III. He has established laboratory-based tests to measure whole blood thrombogenicity.

Prof. Nick Reynolds, Professor of Dermatology & Director of NovoPath, has expertise in early phase trials in inflammatory skin disease and precision medicine.

Dr. Ashley Price, Consultant in Infectious Diseases and theme lead for NIHR Newcastle in Vitro Diganostics Co-operative, has extensive experience as CI/PI in clinical trials of infectious diseases.

Dr. Christopher Duncan, Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow & Consultant in Infectious Diseases, is the Newcastle lead for the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium and PI on several early phase vaccine trials.

Prof. James Shaw, Consultant Endocrinologist, is a leading expert in islet cells transplantation.

Dr. Simon Doe & Dr. Ian Forrest, Consultant Respiratory Physician, had led several early phase trials in cystic fibrosis and pulmonary fibrosis respectively.

Prof. Anthony de Soyza and Dr. Carlos Echevarria are Consultant Respiratory Physicians specialises in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and have led many clinical trials in this area.

Dr Michaela Guglieri is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Neurologist at Newcastle University and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Michela has a specific interest in care, management and translational research in inherited neuromuscular disorders.

Dr Arthur Pratt is a Clinical Senior Lecturer, Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist whose research is focussed on aetiopathogenesis of early rheumatoid arthritis.

Professor Simon Pearce is a Professor of Endocrinology and is interested in early-phase trials of immunomodulation and regenerative medicine for autoimmune endocrinopathies.

Professor Bobby McFarland is a Professor of Paediatric Mitochondrial Medicine and Hon Consultant Paediatric Neurologist whose interest is in mitochondrial disease.
