Ben Porter is the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Manager for the NIHR Newcastle BRC, the NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and the NIHR Newcastle MedTech and In vitro Diagnostics Cooperative (MIC).
For the NIHR Newcastle CRF, he is responsible for the strategic direction of PPIE activities and innovating the way these are carried out.
He supports and delivers a range of PPIE activities, including helping patients and the public shape what and how research is delivered, and advising users of the CRF on PPIE best practices to strengthen their research.
Ben has six years of public health experience, having worked in previous analytical and research project management roles in the NHS and at Newcastle University. Through these roles, he has developed strong relationships with many stakeholders both nationally and internationally, including patients, patient organisations, research organisations, industry and healthcare professionals.
He also has a strong understanding of the research lifecycle and clinical trial pathway and has worked closely understanding the needs of patients with rare diseases in the UK in his previous role as the UK Myotonic Dystrophy and FSHD Patient Registries Project Manager and Curator.
