Who we are

The NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility brings together the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Newcastle Hospitals) and Newcastle University.

We are one of 22 Clinical Research Facilities across England awarded major funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) where researchers can deliver early-phase and complex studies capacity and expertise in the NHS.

The NIHR Newcastle CRF offers expertise in a variety of areas with three main facilities delivering high-quality, cutting-edge experimental medical research.

We have three main areas:

  • Newcastle CRF which focusses on a number on different clinical specialities,
  • Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) with a focus on Dementia and Alzheimer’s.
  • Newcastle Dental CRF with a focus on trials in dentistry.

Our aim is to support effective delivery of high-quality, cutting-edge early phase and experimental medical research by providing a state-of-the-art facility and specialist workforce and knowledge. We work closely with our patient and public partners as well as academic and commercial organisations within a national framework of UKCRFs and other NIHR infrastructure, putting our patients at the forefront of everything we do.
